Rush, Rush, Rush. Do. Do. Do.
It seems that in this day and age, we are all rushing, trying to get more done. Working harder and longer. Playing harder and longer. Staying up and packing in more into the 24 hours a day that we have. It seems like we are getting more done. Having a more productive life. But we are giving up something that is not just important, but essential. SLEEP.
It's been shown that people today get less sleep than they did in the past. In fact, it is likely about 2 hours less now than a few decades ago. It's probably due to a number of factors, but artificial light and its impact on the sleep/wake cycle of society is likely a major factor. And recently, don't forget about the proliferation of TV, computers, and smartphones, all of which emit wavelengths that impact our ability for sufficient good quality sleep.
Here are just a few things that happen quickly: Your decision making become impaired, as well as problem-solving. So you work harder to make a good decision an ultimately you get the opposite. A poor decision.
You become more irritable, edgy, moody and irrational. In time your risk for significant depression, psychosis and stroke go up.
In a nutshell...you can become a nut-case.
Then there are the other physical elements that impact you. The CDC in a web page has outlined many different physical ailments that appear to be associated with insufficient (<7 hrs/ night) sleep.
So it's NOT your imagination. Not getting enough good quality sleep IS making you sick. Your risk of heart attack, stroke, asthma, cancer depression, diabetes, and other diseases go UP when you don't get enough sleep.
And this doesn't even consider the increased risk you have when you make decisions that impact your life (and the lives of others), when you are sleep impaired.
So in the end, not getting enough sleep can be a huge risk to you, your life, your career and just about everything in your life. Poor decisions, irritability ... and outright illness are things that can happen when you don't sleep enough.
If you are serious about reducing risk in your life, a simple, and quite a pleasant way of doing that is simply sleeping a sufficient amount of time every night. Improved decision making, attitude, and health are all likely outcomes from this single simple change in your life.
What have you got to lose....except unnecessary risk?
